We fish from a Carolina Skiff 2480 DLX, a centre-console bay boat set up for shallow water. It’s the sort of hull that gets you across a flat without much fuss and sits stable enough to cast from all day.

Why this hull
Skiffs draft shallow, and shallow is where the fish are around here. Redfish feed in ankle-deep water on a rising tide, and a boat that needs three feet under it can’t follow them there. This one can get into the back of a flat and still run home comfortably when the wind picks up.
It’s stable too, which matters more than people expect. A flat-bottomed hull doesn’t roll when three people move to one side to look at a fish, and that makes a difference on a boat with children aboard or anyone who isn’t used to being on the water.
What’s on board
A bimini top for shade, which on the Texas coast in July is not optional. Single outboard, centre console, and an open deck with room to fish without standing on each other.
Rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice and ice chests all live on the boat. All the required safety gear is aboard and we go through where it is before we leave the dock. You don’t need to bring anything beyond what’s on the what to pack list.
How we use it
Most days it drifts or gets poled across the flats. When we want to work a shoreline properly we’ll anchor up or step out and wade, and the boat sits where we leave it.
The shallow draft also means short runs. Out of the harbour on Cotter Ave we’re on fishable water in minutes, which is the practical reason fishing out of Port Aransas works as well as it does. The same hull handles the Rockport bays and the Corpus Christi flats when conditions send us that way.
